Installing LUTs in Final Cut Pro is straightforward once you know where Apple stores them. Unlike some editors, Final Cut reads LUTs from a system-level folder --- so placement matters.
Here's the correct process.
Step 1: Locate the Custom LUT Folder
Final Cut Pro reads LUTs from this directory on macOS:
Macintosh HD / Library / Application Support / ProApps / Custom LUTs
Important: This is the system Library, not your user Library.
To access it:
- Open Finder
- Click Go (top menu)
- Hold Option
- Click Library
- Navigate to:
Application Support → ProApps → Custom LUTs
If the Custom LUTs folder doesn't exist, create it manually.
Step 2: Add Your .cube Files
Copy your .cube files into the Custom LUTs folder.
You can organize them using subfolders:
Custom LUTs/ ├── CleanLUTs/ │ ├── LOG/ │ └── STD/
Keeping them organized makes them easier to find inside Final Cut.
No refresh button is needed --- Final Cut reads the folder automatically.
Step 3: Apply a LUT in Final Cut Pro
- Open Final Cut Pro
- Select your clip in the timeline
- Open the Inspector (top right)
- Click the Effects browser
- Search for Custom LUT
- Drag the Custom LUT effect onto your clip
Now go to the Inspector:
- Click the LUT dropdown
- Select your installed LUT
- Adjust Mix to control intensity
Adjust LUT Intensity
Final Cut provides a built-in intensity slider:
- 100% = full LUT strength
- 50--70% = often ideal for subtle grading
- Below 40% = soft color enhancement
For best results, balance exposure before applying your LUT.
Recommended Workflow
For log footage (S-Log3, C-Log, etc.):
- Correct exposure using Color Wheels
- Fix white balance
- Apply LUT
- Fine-tune using Color Curves if needed
Do not apply LUT before correcting exposure --- LUTs assume properly balanced input.
Troubleshooting
LUT not appearing? - Ensure it's placed in the system Library path (not user Movies folder) - Restart Final Cut Pro - Confirm file format is .cube
Image looks off? - Use the LOG folder for flat/log footage (S-Log, C-Log, D-Log, etc.) and the STD folder for standard phone or Rec.709 footage - Ensure your project color space matches your delivery format (Rec.709 for most workflows)
Final Notes
Once added, LUTs remain available across all Final Cut Pro projects.
Installation takes less than two minutes --- and once your workflow is dialed in, applying looks becomes instant.
That's it. You're ready to grade.
